Today is World Autism Awareness Day!
World Autism Awareness Day is a day sanctioned by the UnitedNations (UN) that recognises and celebrates the rights of people with autism. The United Nations General Assembly, in 2008, unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day as a way to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of people with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society. Each year the UN creates a theme for the world to reflect on for that day. This year, the UN has decided to highlight the need for support systems and networks to stay standing during this difficult time to ensure the autism community has the right to self-determination, independence and autonomy, as well as the right to education and employment on an equal basis with others.
This day is a wonderful reminder of Autism SA’s strong values-driven culture of empowerment of, and support for, individuals living with autism, with our vision that each individual on the autism spectrum lives the life they choose in an inclusive society. Though this is a difficult and constantly changing time for many, our heart and passion for the community is still strong – and our community is the purpose and reason that Autism SA, and other organisations like us, exist.Throughout April, which is also Autism Awareness Month, we will continue to raise awareness, understanding, acceptance, and inclusion as we share resources, inclusive initiatives, inspirational stories and tips, and seek to celebrate our incredible community.
Happy World Autism Awareness Day!
