The Autiser

University of South Australia/Flinders University Joint Autism Research

Autism research is continuing within the Sansom Institute at the University of South Australia and the School of Psychology at Flinders University. The research is investigating the cause of autism. The cause of autism is complex but it is well known that there is a genetic as well as an environmental component. The current research is focussed on developing a laboratory test to diagnose autism. Eventually it is hoped that the test will also be able to categorise the type of autism and assist with selecting the interventions that will result in the best outcome for an individual.

DNA and urine are needed from children with autism aged 12 or less and their typically developing siblings. Your help would be greatly valued and will contribute to a growing body of South Australian-based research into autism.

DNA
A sample of DNA is required from each participant. This sample will be obtained using a toothbrush and the process is very similar to brushing teeth. The DNA sample will be kept for up to three years for use in this specific study. Participant’s DNA will not be used for any other purpose other than autism research. There is no obligation to agree to longer (indefinite) storage of the DNA for use in other studies.

Urine
Two morning urine samples are also required from each participant. These are to be obtained within a seven day period and must be separated by at least one day.

To date we have collected samples from children in 60 families. Preliminary results have been encouraging but more participants are needed.

Information collected during this study will be treated with the strictest confidence.
