$4.5 million for autism playgroups
Minister for Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, and Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Children's Services, Bill Shorten, today announced $4.5 million for the delivery of 150 Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) Playgroups across Australia. Can you spare an hour or two each fortnight to be a listening ear to newer parents?
Volunteers are needed for the “Someone to turn to…” ™ parent to parent support program provides one-on-one telephone support for parents who have a child with a diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder. It provides emotional and practical support by linking newer parents who wish to have supportive contact with a volunteer parent who has had similar experiences.

First Autism Prevalence Study for Australia
An exhaustive three year study commissioned by the Australian Autism Advisory Board on Autism Spectrum Disorders into the prevalence of autism led by Perth paediatrician Dr John Wray has led to the conclusion that 1 in 160 Australian children aged between 6 and 12 years have an Autism Spectrum Disorder - that is over 10,000 Australian children in that age group.
