Treatment and Education of Autistic
and related Communication handicapped Children (TEACCH)
Eric Schopler and his colleagues started TEACCH
at the University of Carolina. Their aim is to provide a
whole life approach to helping people with autism by presenting
information visually, and placing structure and predictability
in the environment. TEACCH principles can be used in the
classroom, the home and the community. By using two of the
characteristics of autism, good visual skills and adherence
to routine, TEACCH aims to reduce stress and anxiety and
help people with autism learn and become independent.
Structured teaching, one of
the main principles of the TEACCH approach, requires adjusting
the classroom to provide clear visual boundaries, providing
a schedule, and clear work systems.
