Sensory Integration Therapy (SI):
Based on the work of Jean Ayres, an American
occupational therapist, SI examines individuals sensory
processing systems. Activities focus on the sensory modalities
of touch, taste, movement, visual, smell and auditory input.
SI includes the use of weighted vests and blankets, deep
pressure, exploring the texture of objects and particular
movements. Many autobiographical accounts of individuals
with autism report disordered sensory experiences. These
can be extreme sensitivities and/or under reactions to sensory
input.
