Chelation of Mercury

Some researchers suspect mercury poisoning as a possible trigger for the development of Autism Spectrum Disorders. Mercury poisoning is believed to occur through environmental factors such as pollution. The role of thiomersal, a mercury based preservative used in some vaccines, is being investigated. Mercury is removed from the body by a process called chelation. Chelation involves administration of a chemical substance that binds to the mercury in the body and is then excreted. Some researchers believe that this can be useful in decreasing behaviours associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
