Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine
technique that involves the use of localised needles or
application of electric currents to points on the body.
It is believed this balances the body and energy (qi) systems.
The use of acupuncture, specifically focusing on the tongue,
is currently been researched with children with an Autism
Spectrum Disorder. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the tongue
is seen as an essential diagnostic tool and particular points
on it are linked to the brain. Stimulation of these points
on the tongue aims to reconnect the neurological systems,
which may counteract the difficulties associated with autism,
such as attention and emotion. It is thought that this treatment
will then help the individual to be more open to multidisciplinary
approaches such as speech pathology, behaviour support and
occupational therapy.
