The
Asperger Point of View Video/DVD
Asperger syndrome,
although increasingly recognised in recent times,
remains a disorder that is not widely understood.
It is not simply a mild form of autism but in many
ways, a hidden disability.
People with the disorder have a unique
cognitive style and experience the world in a unique
way as their thoughts and feelings are processed differently.
The only outward sign we see of this is the individual's
behaviour and actions which often cause misunderstandings
and misconceptions.
Individuals with Asperger syndrome may
have specific skills and strengths but also a range
of deficits and difficulties. There are certainly
some success stories but there are also many struggles.
There are times of community understanding and acceptance
and times of ignorance and rejection.
This video, as an introduction to Asperger
syndrome, educates and informs as well as gives some
insight into the reality of living with the disorder.
It is suitable for carers and other professionals,
families who may have a child or adult member with
the syndrome, or those people who have been diagnosed
and want to hear from others in a similar position.
While we can only hope to give a glimpse
of this syndrome and it's effects in a 30 minute film,
we have endeavoured to gather as much information
as possible directly from those people who live with
it every day so that we may all gain a greater understanding
of the Asperger point of view.
