AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES 2017

Each April, Autism SA along with the Australian Autism community promote Autism Awareness Month.  .Autism SA has arranged the following events to raise awareness, understanding, acceptance, support, inclusion and self-determination to ensure that people on the autism spectrum and their families can get the most out of life.

World Autism Awareness Day
Each April 2nd, the Autism community celebrate Light It Up Blue, in recognition of the UN sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day.
Autism SA has partnered with some of Adelaide’s most iconic buildings to light up the night sky. Buildings include:

• Adelaide Convention Centre
• The Entertainment Centre
• Adelaide City Riverbank Footbridge

Regrettably, the “Chase the Feeling” event has been postponed. All parties involved sincerely apologise for any disappointment. Planning is underway to facilitate a future date.

Learning in the disability sector – Exhibition and Seminar

Autism SA is pleased to be exhibiting at the Learning in the Disability Sector Exhibition and Seminar which is to provide information on employment opportunities for individuals on the spectrum. The event is hosted by Tony Piccolo MP in association with the Adelaide North Special School and the Disability Workforce Hub (Northern Futures Inc.).

Autism SA Conference- Social Cognition and Emotional Regulation: Truly Understanding Behaviour Tips, Techniques and Strategies for Effective Support of Behaviour

Kari Dunn Buron comes to Australia as an international expert recognised for her significant contribution to the autism field to present a practical, innovation conference for families, educators and other professionals.

Brick-a-laide Sensory Friendly Sessions
Brick-a-laide, Adelaide’s biggest and most comprehensive LEGO® fan event returns to the Adelaide Convention Centre this Easter Long Weekend! For the first time, Autism SA are teaming up with the event organisers to present formalised sensory friendly sessions aimed at the Autism SA community.

Session times:
·Friday 14th April 8.00am & 4.30pm
·Saturday 15th April 8.00am & 4.30pm

These sessions will be held in a quiet environment with sensory activities provided in a designated quiet space, separate to the event halls.

Online ticket prices:
GA- $12,
Children (2-15 years) $7.

Children under 2 are free and do not require a ticket when accompanied by a paying adult.

BOUNCE Autism Friendly Session- FREE
Autism SA is happy to announce that Bounce will open an hour early on April 18th to provide an exclusive sensory friendly session for families of Autism SA.
With more than 100 interconnected trampolines housed within huge, colourful spaces, BOUNCE is a spring-loaded urban playground with a wide range of things to do; where hard surfaces are replaced with circus-grade sponge, giant air bags and springs.

Ride for Autism Fundraiser
Ride for Awareness 2017 is all about raising awareness for acceptance of Autism here in South Australia. Please come join the ride for this year and help raise money for Autism SA so they can keep helping our families and children in need

This year we will be riding from the Autism SA car park down to Willunga via Glenelg, the Beachfront & McLaren Vale finishing in the park next to the Willunga Rose Garden on Aldinga Road Willunga for a family picnic day.

Timeline of event:
9:30am Arrive at Autism SA 1/262 Marion Rd, Netley SA 5037
11.00am Stands up
11:45am stop for a 45 min break at Pt Noarlunga Wooden Playground
12:30pm Arrive Willunga for a family picnic
*Stickers, Ribbons and cash donations can be bought on ride day!

Ride time is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours

Latitude Autism Friendly Session- FREE

Latitude will be opening early on the 24th April exclusively for Autism SA to provide a sensory friendly session for families of Autism SA.

Boasting performance trampolines, a dedicated climbing zone with rock climbing walls, pink stepping poles and an 8-meter bungee tower, as well a giant airbag, basketball lanes, dodgeball courts and a huge foam pit.

MIDDLETON SURF SESSION - Autism Friendly Session

Surf the waves these school holiday’s at one of the Fleurieu Peninsula’s most iconic locations, Middleton Beach. This opportunity allows adults and children the chance to learn how to surf through a 2 hour session, which will include a demonstration and safety instruction presentation in both ocean safety and how to stand and dismount the board safely whilst in the water. This session will run from 10am Saturday 29th of April and will be an opportunity to learn new skills in a fun and safe environment.

We will also be giving away one free place to this session - more information on how to enter soon!
