2018 National Autism Awareness Month

April is recognised as National Autism Awareness Month, with the United Nations (UN) sanctioned World Autism Awareness Day falling on 2 April each year.

This year, Autism SA has arranged a number of awareness raising activities throughout the month… but have you ever wondered where this all started?

World Autism Awareness Day was initiated when the Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities was enforced by the UN in 2008. The purpose of the Convention - a tool to foster an inclusive and caring society - is to ‘promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity’.

As part of the Convention, the UN’s General Assembly unanimously declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day to highlight the need to help improve the quality of life of those with autism so they can lead full and meaningful lives as an integral part of society.

This year, the UN announced that the focus of the day would be on empowering women and girls with autism’. You can learn more about it here http://www.un.org/en/events/autismday/.

With one in every 100 Australians diagnosed on the autism spectrum in this country the month of April is dedicated in its entirety to raising autism awareness and encouraging acceptance and inclusion through National Autism Awareness Month.

Autism SA is proud to again be working with a number of organisations and individuals to reinforce the message. Keep your eyes on our Facebook page, website and Infomail during the month to hear some very special stories from our community, and to find information and updates about events, activations and giveaways taking place as part of our month long campaign focused on awareness, understanding, acceptance and inclusion.
